How to play

Click any tile next to the empty square to slide it into the gap. Keep sliding until the tiles read 1, 2, 3 … 15 in order with the blank in the bottom-right. Every shuffle is guaranteed solvable.

Tips & strategy

Solve the top row first — and always solve the last two of a row together (e.g. solve 3 and 4 as a pair), then drop them into place. Same rule for the left column. Never scramble rows you have already finished.

Good for

  • Classic logic puzzle practice.
  • Good "one more go" commute game.
  • Teaching children parity and sequencing.

Frequently asked questions

Are all shuffles solvable?

Yes. The board is shuffled by doing random legal moves from the solved state, so every starting position is guaranteed solvable.

What is the world record?

Times vary hugely — sub-30 seconds is strong. The optimum move count for the hardest possible 15-puzzle position is 80 moves.
